Get started by learning about the types of investments and ways to invest
Invest in private companies in exchange for equity (company shares).
Invest directly into a private company as an angel investor on your own (without a group or syndicate), conducting your own due diligence.
Join an organized angel group for women that provides services that may include company screening, due diligence process, pitch events, and investor education. Depending on the group, you can invest individually or in a syndicate with other group members.
Invest into a formal fund that has been set up and professionally managed to invest in private companies focused on women founders. The fund managers select the companies and make investments in several at one time. This option diversifies your investing portfolio and spreads the risk and return opportunity over several companies.
EQUITY CROWDFUNDING (ACCREDITED INVESTORS* ONLY)
Invest through online platforms, individually or in a syndicate group. Some platforms provide female founders as a search filter. Minimum investment is typically $1000.
*In the United States, “accredited investors” must have a net worth of at least $1,000,000, excluding the value of one's primary residence, or have income at least $200,000 each year for the last two years (or $300,000 combined income if married) and have the expectation to make the same amount this year.
EQUITY CROWDFUNDING (NON-ACCREDITED INVESTORS)
New online platforms that allow non-accredited investors to invest in early stage companies. Some platforms provide female founders as a search filter. Minimum investment is typically $500.
Provide loans to women-owned businesses locally and globally for as little as $25. Minimal amounts, interest rates and payback terms vary by platform.
Support women entrepreneurs on their crowdfunding campaigns, and receive products and other rewards in return. This is not an equity investment or a loan.
SheEO: Provide $1100 into a perpetual fund that is loaned to women at no/low interest rates in a region/country. This is not an equity investment or a loan.
Hypatia Invests: A platform for investing in women in leadership. Invest in funds that sponsor women. At least 1% of your portfolio.
Ellevest: An educational platform advising women on how and where to invest, including Ellevest Impact Portfolios.
Investibule: A curated site of investment and lending opportunities.
Equallet: An online directory of women-owned businesses to direct your purchasing dollars. Eventually this platform will also house potential investment opportunities.
GENDER LENS INVESTING
Invest in publicly traded companies using gender as a category of analysis when making investment decisions.
Ways to invest with a “gender lens”:
Investments that increase access to capital for women entrepreneurs and businesses that have women in leadership positions (i.e. have women in the C-Suite or on the Board of Directors).
Investments that promote gender equity in the workplace by investing in private sector companies with leading gender policies (e.g. pay equity, female-friendly HR policies) that also extend across their supply chains.
Investments that increase the number of products and services that benefit women and girls by directing capital to socially responsible businesses that develop and offer these products and services.
